The Spirit of Thingyan: Washing Away the Old
Myanmar New Year, or Thingyan, is traditionally celebrated in mid-April and has been listed on UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2024. It is most famouse for its vibrant water festival, where people joyfully splash water on one another in the streets.
The pouring of water symbolizes the washing away of the previous year’s misfortunes, impurities, and regrets. It is a time of spiritual cleansing, forgiveness, and preparing oneself to step into the new year with a pure heart and a clean slate. It is a beautiful reminder that no matter what happened yesterday, today offers a chance to start anew.
For our homeland, this message of renewal has never felt more necessary. The past few years in Myanmar has been marked by instability, earthquakes, and collective struggles. The weight of the old year has been heavy for our communities.
Starting this new endeavour right now, for us, is an act of hope. It is a conscious decision to look forward, to believe that better things are ahead, and to build something meaningful and beautiful despite the challenges. By sharing the resilience and incredible craftsmanship of Myanmar’s artisans with the world, we are stepping into this New Year with purpose—honouring our roots, supporting our people, and fully embracing the promise of a fresh start.
The Tradition of Satuditha : A Culture of Giving
Another significant tradition of the Myanmar New Year is the community generosity. During Thingyan, people across the country practice Satuditha—the act of setting up open pavilions to give away free food, sweets, and cooling drinks to absolutely anyone who walks by.
Families and neighbourhoods pool their resources together, not to sell, but simply to give. It is a time dedicated to charity, making merit, and treating strangers like extended family.
